• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Starrene Rhett -- Great Resource For Teaching Children History : Margeaux did an excellent job capturing the essence of some of the most trailblazing moments and people in history. This book uses important incidents in African American History, such as the formation of the Negro Leagues, the Tulsa Race Massacre, the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Bloody Sunday, the Million Man March, and more to discuss the contributions of those events and the people involved in context to how America was built from the 1900's to the 2000's It was written clearly and concisely so that little history buffs can easily digest the information and possibly be interested in exploring more as they continue their quest for knowledge. Perfectly sized sections about seminal events in African American history from the founding of the NAACP to the historic election of Barack Obama. The chapters are organized into decades which allows you to experience the events and their impact on each generation. The photos and graphics add a nice touch too. Great read! Ms. Weston does a spectacular job of chronicling African American history in a captivating and child-friendly manner. The book also contains vivid pictures and many short biographies of significant figures in African American history, which truly bring the content to life. I am looking forward to sharing this book with my elementary school students! This book is a must-purchase for any parent, family member, educator, or grown-up who wants to learn more about African American history with their children. This book gives enough detail without boring the reader. Margeaux Weston did an amazing job of including the necessary information without overwhelming the reader. I like how the chapters are broken up in time periods instead of everything running together. The short tidbits of information written on famous people of our past is an added bonus.
