:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from A. Part. -- Hardback Edition: Unreadable photocopy of another book : I purchased the hardback edition. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mandolin -- Great Alternative for Aristotle's Complete 10 Works on Ethics : My dad asked me to get Aristotle's books on ethics for him, but let's be real, he's not a philosopher and he wasn't going to wade through all 10 books. He was happy with this book, which gave him a good overview of the ideas he really wanted to consider. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Still Relevant : While it's a bit difficult to read - long, complex sentences - it is more than worth the time taken to let this classic sink in and take root. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bobby Bambino -- Great translation : . There are 10 short appendices giving a few words on several different pertinent topics. It was a great version for me, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone else looking for a good translation of the Ethics. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cal Baldari -- Read more philosophy : If you read only one work of philosophy, read this. If you read only one work of ethics, read this. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- 3.5 Stars Good Read : Parts were very good , other parts were just Ok. For a book that was written over 2000 years ago you should not come into reading this book and expect a big revelation. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Robert W. Smith -- THE BASIC SOURCE!!! : Wow! I'm reviewing Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics! First, I read this first at college 25 years ago. Re-reading it provided me an amazing a-ha!!! So much more made sense to me! It's one of those texts that is worth re-reading a couple of times in one's life, for as we mature, we are privy to new insights offered by this great person. First, this translation contained at least a half dozen translation errors. What I found to be errors off the cuff makes me wonder what other errors might have been made in the translation and editing process. The errors that I found were minor and would not have altered my decision to purchase this masterpiece. Second, while brilliant and while he discusses the values and virtues and deficits and aspirations and social processes, this piece does not focus upon the applied ethics that I most enjoy. I give this a solid "A" and highly recommend it for anyone who wishes to study human nature and ethical conflicts. Overall, the translation is probably easier to read than an older translation, most likely because of the difference between today's and yesterday's more eloquent English. Again, outstanding reading! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from finaleyes -- Clearly Written Interpretation : I like this version of the Ethics very much. The writing is clear, the chapters are subcategorized with lovely italic headlines that tell you where you're going in that particular chunk of text, and the type is readable. The footnotes are included on each page, rather than all at the end (a very considerate service to the reader; I wish every publisher would please do that). All in all, I'm very happy I chose this translation. I really can't complain, but I wish all publishers would make the margins from the edge of the page to the text a bit wider for annotating. This would be true for any academic text but especially a philosophical one. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2010 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kabaal van Napels -- The invention of the golden mean - A tough read : Written in the 4th century BC, "The Nicomachean Ethics" by Aristotle studies the pursuit of happiness and is an exploration into the characteristics of a good man. In other words, how do we live successful lives, what makes somebody a good person and why should happiness be our goal. This work is famous for Aristotle’s introduction of the “golden mean” and has had a major influence on the ethics amongst others in the West up to this day. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from opus -- Not north east of London : One of the founding books of Western Thought yet not quite what one might have expected: it is not in its ten books a Greek Ten Commandments of what to do and what not to do, ranging as it does from Friendship - for the Facebook generation - and Happiness, to the distinction between Practical Wisdom and Knowledge. This unacknowledged century old translation has the benefit of thirty pages of notes, which in their obscurity need their own notes. The cover photo is however attractive and as always a nice, modestly priced, edition from Dover. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2013 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from michaelfowle -- Of course the book is one of the most influential ... : Of course the book is one of the most influential of all time, but my penguin copy had the pages of the index bound through. It could not have been sold in a shop in this condition. I use the index a lot and will now have to buy another copy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Francesco S. -- Yes, came on time and the book exceeded expectations : Education purpose and learning philosophy ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Harvey -- DO NOT BUY!!! : Awful print quality. As you can see from the photos, most of the pages have this large print smear and therefore can’t be read. DONT GET THIS BOOK! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 6, 2021 )
